"Overseas" presents works by 15 artists and offers members and guests of the Kunstverein the opportunity for new encounters or rediscoveries. Members can purchase works as annual Jahresgaben and thus support not only the artists but also the Kunstverein.

"Source", "Family Jewels", "The Hidden Chapters Of My Lost Insistence", "The Hygienic Colors", "Paradise Lost", "Public Abstraction, Private Construction" - these were just some of the exhibition titles at Kunstverein Arnsberg. At the end of the year, there is time to look back and take stock, which again raises many questions - and one of them is certainly: Why are so many titles in English? Does the German language not have enough expressive power or do the artists want to use an international title and thus avoid misinterpretation? Is it the attraction of the foreign or the peculiarity of the specific term whose (double) meaning is lost in translation? Giving an exhibition a title is often as difficult as naming your own child. So it is very personal and sensitive. Incidentally, popular and international first names in 2011 were Mia and Ben... The English titles of our artists ultimately also thematize a social development. This year we have given our annual exhibition the title "Overseas". Once again, it is an English word with several meanings that cannot be clearly translated into German. "Overseas" is translated as "overseas" and "abroad". The Englishman does not only mean the South Seas but also, for example, the neighboring European countries; the European, however, will not refer to England but to the distant beaches with "Overseas". One and the same term thus designates completely different areas depending on the position and cultural centering of the perceiver. This also takes place beyond the reality of political and geographical associations in the artistic projections and fantasies of our exhibition.
