4 Flags on the Neumarkt Arnsberg

The wind blows across Neumarkt and makes flags dance on four masts. They are large, colourful and unfamiliar. The unusual geometric pattern does not represent any known municipality, group or company; coats of arms and logos are also completely absent. A closer look reveals that the flags are not printed, but hand-painted: a brushstroke is evident.

The location on Neumarkt, directly in front of the Kunstverein Arnsberg, raises new questions: Could these flags also be paintings? Or rather kinetic sculpture? Colours and shapes dissolve symbolism. The power of the flag remains present, but free of any function or message. Artist Raul Walch's flags on Neumarkt are left to the wind and our perception of them.

Raul Walch was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1980 and lives in Berlin.
