Contemporary art in Iran

Time and again, Iran attracts public attention in this country, especially due to news about the nuclear dispute, US sanctions or propagandistic statements by the Iranian government. Persian culture, which is still visible today in the country's cultural sites, is also famous and is appreciated by travelers from Germany and all over the world. But what about modern and contemporary, more recent culture and art? Iran's turbulent history in the 20th and 21st centuries is characterized by radical modernization projects and political upheavals, which are also reflected in the visual arts. How does contemporary art present itself and what are its themes? What is the relationship between the art scene and the political processes and how is the distinction between independent and official art formed? What influence does the eventful history of art in Iran, from early modernization efforts to the art of the Iranian revolution and the new, global orientation of young artists in the reform era, have on contemporary art production? The lecture, followed by a discussion, will present and discuss these questions and topics. The focus will not be on an "art of the others", but on a history of encounters, connections and exchange within the global context. At the same time, the mohit.art project by Bernd Fechner and Hannah Jacobi, a digital platform and network that initiates, realizes and supports collaboration, exchange and dialogue between artists and cultural practitioners in Iran and Germany and beyond between the art contexts in the Middle East and Europe, will be presented for the first time.

Hannah Jacobi is an art historian and author with a focus on global art, working mainly on contemporary art in Iran.

Dr. Bernd Fechner works with his agency photomarketing.de internationally from Berlin and Cologne as a networker and publicist, event and cultural manager.

The event is a cooperation between the city of Arnsberg, the Kunstverein Arnsberg and mohit.art as part of the Arnsberg Summer of Culture.

From June 14 to July 12, 2021, the Sonja Vieth bookshop in Arnsberg will be offering literature that provides in-depth insights into the past and present not only of art in Iran. This includes Hannah Jacobi's book Stimmen aus Teheran. Interviews on Contemporary Art in Iran (Edition Faust, 2017), which provides an overview of contemporary art in Iran and its history, as well as insights into the working spaces and lives of artists and cultural workers in Tehran. In addition, a small selection of artistic posters from exhibitions, art festivals, theater plays and films from the 1960s and 70s will be on display in the bookstore: a rare opportunity to take a look at the pre-revolutionary, genre-crossing art scene in Iran, which is almost unknown in this country.
