Introduction by art critic and musicologist Reinhard Ermen.

The Kunstverein is the first institution to present a comprehensive overview dedicated exclusively to the artist's drawings from the period 2013 - 2022. Around 720 drawings will be on display, selected from an even larger reservoir from the last 10 years.

The basis of these drawings is squared paper, the individual squares of which the artist fills in with coloured pencils, sometimes only a few, sometimes many.

Originally sketches for painting concepts, the drawings that have accompanied Andreas Karl Schulze's work for many years have developed over the years into artefacts in their own right.

The choice of colours and the placement of the colour boxes in the grid are sometimes subject to chance, within changing parameters. These can be read as ornamental groupings that open up a space for simple geometric shapes through to cryptic signs, simple letters, legible or illegible texts. This results in a complex field of possibilities that consistently analyses or questions contexts of meaning, and not without a touch of humour.

The art critic and musicologist Reinhard Ermen says: ‘ ...But these sheets, which like to appear in wall-filling collectives, have it all. They are about finding one's way in the given space of action, which makes damn clear specifications in the unlimited play of variables. This is a radical realism that is just as close to everyday life at the little shop around the corner (as the place to buy the chequered paper, press release) as it is to a highly concentrated concept of economically deployed means.’ (quoted from: KUNSTFORUM international, vol. 270, 2020)

Andreas Karl Schulze was born in Rheydt in 1955 and now lives in Hanover.
